Maria Santos Rivera
1960 – 2025
Maria Santos Rivera was a force of nature — a community organizer, mother of four, and tireless advocate for immigrant families. Her kitchen was always open, her hugs were legendary, and her determination to build a better world was unshakeable.
Maria emigrated from the Philippines at age 22 with $200 and a dream. She worked three jobs while earning her nursing degree, then spent 30 years as a pediatric nurse. But it was her volunteer work that defined her: Maria founded the Sunrise Community Center, which has served over 10,000 families since 2005.
She believed that food was love made visible. Every Sunday, she hosted family dinners that grew from a table of six to a gathering of forty. Her adobo recipe, written on a flour-dusted index card, is now the most treasured heirloom in the Rivera family.
Maria leaves behind a community transformed by her kindness, four children who inherited her fire, and a legacy of love that no border could contain.

Mom, you showed us that love is a verb. Every meal you cooked, every family you helped — that was your prayer. We will keep your table open.
